Nevada Nursing Home Abuse Statistics
There are no surveys identifying exactly how many Nevada nursing home residents experience some form of abuse, but there are some ways to estimate the number. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about one in six people over 60 experienced abuse in a nursing home or other senior community in the past year.
Nevada has about 5,900 nursing home residents. Applying the WHO’s number to Nevada’s nursing home population indicates that as many as 981 residents may have experienced at least one incident of abuse in 2024.
In 2024, Nevada’s Adult Protective Services received 11,000 complaints of elder abuse by victims, family members, doctors, and others. Not all of these victims lived in nursing homes. However, 11,000 complaints from Nevada’s population of over 515,000 seniors equate to roughly 2% of the state’s residents over 65.
This number is significantly lower than the 17% estimated by the WHO. However, the actual number likely falls between these extremes.
Elder Abuse Complaints by Age Group
The complaints received in Nevada contain two important statistics. First, the most common age bracket of victims involved in these complaints is 75 to 84.
Specifically, the alleged victims’ ages are as follows:
- 26.1% of victims were between the ages of 60 and 69
- 18.6% of victims were between the ages of 70 and 74
- 34.4% of victims were between the ages of 75 and 84
- 20.9% of victims were 85 or older
In analyzing these numbers, you must bear in mind that these groups aren’t equally distributed. The middle group with the lowest number of reports also covered the fewest years. Thus, it is possible that the reports would be more equal if the groupings were more evenly distributed.
The Prevalence of Different Types of Nursing Home Abuse in Nevada
The second embedded statistic is the breakdown by type of abuse. The most common type of abuse in Nevada is self-abuse. This occurs when a senior is left alone and is unable or unwilling to care for their needs. 40% of complaints included self-abuse.
The next most common complaint was physical, mental, or sexual abuse. 28% of complaints alleged these forms of abuse.
About 28% of complaints included isolation. This form of abuse occurs when seniors are isolated from friends, family, and other social contacts. This may occur as a result of physical restraint. It can also happen when nursing homes fail to accommodate a senior’s mobility limitations, leaving them unable to meet visitors or other residents.
Exploitation is the next most common form of abuse. Also known as financial abuse, exploitation happens when someone takes advantage of the senior financially by taking money or misleading the senior into paying for the abuser’s needs.
About 19% of seniors complained of abandonment. This form of abuse happens when a senior is not assisted with meeting their needs. For example, a resident might not get assistance in using the toilet, leaving them to risk falls or other accidents while doing it on their own.
Neglect was the final category. Neglect happens when a nursing home fails to meet the resident’s needs. They might not receive food, water, warmth, or other essentials. About 14% of complaints alleged neglect.
