How to Get a Motorcycle License in Las Vegas, NV

Unlike other states, Nevada offers a Class M motorcycle license rather than an endorsement. To be eligible to apply for this license, you must be at least 16 years old. You then have two options: take the DMV test or complete a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course.

If you choose to go through the DMV, you’ll have to pass a motorcycle knowledge test, which will assess your comprehension of the Nevada Motorcycle Operator Manual. If you pass this test, you’ll receive an instructional permit with which you can practice. You can schedule your skills test next.

Riders under 18 must hold an instructional permit for at least six months and complete 50 hours of supervised experience before they can take the practical exam. They must also complete a motorcycle safety course.

The skills test will require you to perform a number of fundamental maneuvers. You don’t have to provide your own motorcycle for this assessment. Once you pass this exam and pay the licensing fee, you’ll receive your motorcycle license.

If you don’t want to go through these various tests, you have the option of taking a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. The first step is finding a certified course to take, which you can do by visiting the Motorcycle Safety Foundation website.

After completing an appropriate course, you’ll receive a certificate from the organization, which you can then take to the DMV for your license. You’ll still have to pay a licensing fee.

Helmet Laws and Other Safety Regulations

Nevada is one of only a few states that has universal helmet laws. Las Vegas requires all motorcycle riders to wear approved helmets.

Motorcycles must also be registered. To register your bike, you must have a Dealers Report of Sale or a signed title, as well as valid Evidence of Insurance. Motorcycles are exempt from emissions testing and odometer reporting, however.

Motorcycle riders have the same rights and responsibilities as other road users. They may take up an entire lane of traffic, and up to two bikes can share a single lane. Riders cannot, however, engage in lane splitting, which is when a motorcycle passes other vehicles by traveling between lanes.
