Items To Keep in Your Trunk: Flashlight and Road Flares

Contact Us

Nevada’s highways stretch through some of the most remote terrain in the country. Between Las Vegas and Reno, you’ll find long stretches where cell service drops and help can be miles away. When your car breaks down or you’re involved in a car accident on these roads, the right equipment can mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

Essential Flashlight Features for Roadside Emergencies

Not all flashlights work the same when you need them most. Your emergency flashlight should have multiple brightness settings. High beams help you see what’s wrong with your vehicle. Lower settings preserve battery life while you wait for help.

Look for flashlights with a strobe function. This flashing mode catches the attention of passing drivers far better than a steady beam. A magnetic base lets you attach the light to your car’s body, freeing both hands for repairs or first aid.

Waterproof construction matters in Nevada’s occasional downpours. Check the battery type too. Rechargeable batteries die when you forget to charge them. Some batteries may last longer in storage, but still need regular replacement.

How Proper Lighting Prevents Secondary Accidents

Secondary accidents happen when other vehicles crash into a disabled car or an existing accident scene. These collisions often cause more severe injuries than the original incident. Proper warning lights give approaching drivers time to slow down and change lanes.

Place your warning devices at least 200 feet behind your vehicle on highways. On curves or hills, go even farther. Drivers need enough distance to react safely at highway speeds. One flare isn’t enough. Create a visible path that guides traffic around your location.

When to Deploy Road Flares Safely

Before lighting any flare, check for fuel leaks or spilled gasoline. The smell of gas means you should use LED flares only. Never ignite a traditional flare near any vehicle fluids.

Hold burning flares away from your body and clothing. Point the ignited end toward the ground as you walk to your placement spot. Once positioned, the flare should sit flat on the pavement, not propped against anything that could catch fire.

LED vs. Traditional Flares: Pros and Cons

LED flares cost more upfront but last for years. They’re safer to store and use. Most models include multiple flash patterns and run for 40+ hours on fresh batteries. They work great for routine situations.

Traditional flares are cheaper and incredibly bright. They work without batteries and perform better in extreme weather. But they expire after a few years, create fire risks, and produce toxic smoke. They’re single-use items that need regular replacement.

We recommend keeping both types. Use LED flares as your primary warning devices. Keep traditional flares as backup for situations where maximum visibility is critical.

Seasonal Considerations for Nevada Drivers

Summer heat affects battery life in LED flares and flashlights. Check them more frequently during hot months. Store them in a cooler part of your trunk if possible. Extreme heat can also cause traditional flares to degrade faster.

Winter brings early darkness and occasional snow. Your emergency kit needs to work in cold temperatures. Some batteries perform poorly in freezing weather. Lithium batteries handle cold better than alkaline ones.
